Future British citizens?

The British Home Offfice has announced plans to introduce citizenship ceremonies for 18-year-olds. There are reports this might involve an oath of loyalty to the Queen.

This comes in the same week as a speech by the Chief Inspector of Schools, David Bell on citizenship in schools.

An ICM poll carried out in conjunction with the speech found that a third of pupils regard themselves as English rather than British, compared to only a tenth of their teachers.

The rise of English nationalism is the greatest conceivable threat to the integrity of the UK. That, rather than concerns about integrating ethnic minorities, may be the real thinking behind the citizenship ceremonies.
