Hastings on English nationalism

I’ve just caught up with this interesting report from the Glasgow Herald on a ‘state of the UK’ lecture by Sir Max Hastings in Edinburgh.

Hastings tells of some in the Conservative Party who vent their frustration by imagining returning their party on English nationalism. They dream that could deliver a Tory-dominated English parliament, thus putting them in unholy alliance with Alex Salmond and his tribe. But, then again, he does not see them as a credible force within Toryism.

Personally, I would like to see some kind of English nationalism emerge on the left.

We are trying to emerge. But as we demand constitutional parity with Scotland, and very little else, we can’t really be described as left, right or centre
