Iraqi countergangs emerging

The Inteldump weblog carries an article from the Wall Street Journal noting that US forces in Iraq have begun co-operating with irregular pro-government forces.

As the Yorkshire Ranter notes, this may represent the emergence of loyalist paramilitaries predicted by John Robb of the Global Guerrillas weblog back in October.

A Newsweek article suggested in January that such a policy was under active consideration by the Pentagon. Newsweek noted that the then US ambassador to Iraq, John Negroponte, had been Ronald Reagan’s ambassador to Honduras during the era of the Central American death squads.

Negroponte has since been appointed as the USA’s first Director of National Intelligence. The Sunday Herald speculates this may portend an extension of covert operations to Iran and Syria, and even hints that a high-profile operation may already have taken place.
