Majority back Scottish independence

Polling Report points us to a new poll in the Scotsman that shows 51 per cent support for independence north of the border. The figures also show that the SNP are ahead of Labour on share of the vote, although Labour would still come out slightly ahead in terms of seats according to the Scotsman’s projections.

An SNP – Lib Dem – Green coalition is one possibility on these figures. There will be some tough bargaining before any such alliance is formed though. At a minimum it ought to be able to achieve a deal with Westminster on the kind of fiscal autonomy envisaged by the Lib Dem Steel Comission. The real stumbling block may be the Lib Dem’s opposition to an independence referendum. Perhaps polls like this one will strengthen the SNP’s hand on that issue.
