Magnus Linklater in The Times today:
A STRANGE CREATURE has reared its head during this election — strange, because everyone had assumed that it was extinct. Nationalism is making a comeback. Opinion polls in Wales and Scotland show that, despite devolution, people want even more control over their own affairs. In Northern Ireland, where Sinn Fein has been on the receiving end of the worst publicity it has ever been through, backing for the party and its brand of Irish nationalism remains almost undamaged. Even in England, where nationalism is not even on the agenda, it has become a powerful undercurrent in the course of the campaign.
