Unionist role reversal?

United Irelander has spotted some interesting comments by UUP leader David Trimble.

Apparently, the Ulster Unionists plan to boycott any future executive involving Sinn Fein. Such an executive would only arise if there is a deal between the DUP and Sinn Fein, which is not about to happen in the short term.

Ultimately however, it is the only democratic way forward and if it does come about this will leave the UUP in the same rejectionist position formerly occupied by the DUP.

During the last Stormont executive, the DUP took up the ministries it was entitled to but refused to take part in meetings with Sinn Fein ministers. There have been indications the rules might be changed to prevent this in future.

If so, Mr Trimble’s new policy would simply hand more seats to the DUP.
