In the Belfast Telegraph today, Eric Waugh takes a sceptical view of the SDLP’s proposals for a united Ireland.
If this is the best nationalists can do, unity will remain a chimera. If pressed, I would put my money on ultimate regional independence within a loose British Isles federation, cushioned with a decade of tapering support from London, Dublin and Brussels. But give it another 50 years – at least.
What a lot of Irish commentators don’t seem to have considered, (with the exception of Mr Waugh’s colleague Steven King), is that events in Britain might not allow for that leisurely timescale.
