How the UK state depends on sectarianism

Just caught up (thanks to Nuzhound) with this excellent article from last week by independent MSP Campbell Martin on why the Scottish Government cannot tackle the issue of sectarianism.

For British unionists to continue to dominate and govern Scotland, the status quo has to be maintained. And for the status quo to be maintained, unionist politicians have to ensure that the people of Scotland, primarily the working-class people of Scotland, continue to be divided.

The irony is that in Northern Ireland it is Protestants who support the union, in Scotland its Catholics.
