IRA statement expected

Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness had an unannounced meeting yesterday with Tony Blair. This looks like the most concrete of a number of signs that an IRA statement may be imminent.

The others are the decision of the head of the decommissioning body, Canadian General John De Chastelaine to extended a visit to Ireland begun earlier this month, and the reported resignation of Adams, Maginness, and Martin Ferris from the IRA’s Army coundil.

A statement has been anticipated since April when Adams called on the IRA to move to exclusively political and democratic activity.
