SNP-Tory Rapprochement

The Scotsman has an intriguing story which is sure to have Labour types reaching for their Tartan Tory labels:

A PLEDGE to grow Scotland’s economy using the powers of devolution before seeking a referendum on independence should be at the heart of the Scottish National Party’s next Holyrood manifesto.

The radical proposal, which turns on its head the traditional SNP position – that Scotland will only flourish when it achieves independence – is unveiled today by Kenny MacAskill, one of the Nationalists’ most senior MSPs.

Mr MacAskill’s ideas have won the enthusiastic backing of John Swinney, the former party leader, and last night prompted the Scottish Tories to suggest that the two parties might be able to form a government coalition after 2007.
